The Choir of the University of Silesia continues the traditions of the Singing Society HARMONIA in Cieszyn founded in 1908. As an academic choir it was established in 1971 at the Branch of the University of Silesia in Cieszyn. Currently the members of the choir are students of the University of Silesia. The headquarters of the team is the Department of Arts and Sciences of Education. The choir took part in many festivals in Poland and around the world, winning many prestigious awards, recording for radio and television, making CD recordings, premiering works by outstanding composers such as Wojciech Kilar and Józef Świder. He participated in performances of oratorio-cantata and symphonic forms. He has performed in Europe, South Korea and Thailand. He has worked with well-known orchestras – the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, the Polish Radio Symphony in Krakow, the State Opera Orchestra in Kosice, the Philharmonic Orchestras in Katowice, Koszalin, Kraków, Zabrze, Białystok) and conductors – José Maria Floréňcio, Antoni Wit, Marcin Nałęcz-Niesiołowski. HARMONIA owes its achievements to both choristers and excellent conductors – Władysław Wilczak, Helena Danel-Bobrzyk, Halina Goniewicz-Urbaś and Izabella Zielecka-Panek. HARMONIA’s rich repertoire includes works by the most outstanding composers from medieval music to contemporary works. The band gladly performs Polish music, including artistic stylizations of folk music. From 2023 the conductor of the UŚ HARMONIA Choir is prof. dr. hab. Joanna Glenc.
